OUR
WINEMAKER

WINEMAKER, VITICULTURIST AND
SHEEP FARMER AT THAMNUS WINES.

Growing up in the Free State, P.J. Geyer quickly realized that corn doesn’t ferment well after his first attempt at wine exploded in his mother’s fridge! He moved to the Western Cape and enrolled in Elsenburg Agricultural College. P.J. soon assisted with a harvest at Hamilton Russell Vineyards and then became the assistant winemaker at Springfield Estate. He also worked vintages at Washington Hills Cellars (USA) and Villa Maria Estate (New Zealand), before joining the well-known Moueix family (Chateau Petrus) as flying winemaker assisting with harvests at Chateau Mazeyres, Fonroque and Moulin du Cadet. He has further experience at Ingwe in Somerset West and Barton in Botrivier.

He joined Thamnus Wines as Winemaker and Viticulturist in 2019. He quickly recognized the incredible potential locked up in the terroir and history of the farm. In 2021 P.J. started managing the sheep farming and learning about the synergies of farming a polyculture. P.J.’s aim is to capture the terroir, working with nature to develop a reputation for finely balanced, classic wines.

AREA

OVERBERG REGION

Thamnus Wines lies within the Overberg Region on the Cape South Coast of the Western Cape in South Africa. The farm overlooks Shaws Pass and is 25 minutes drive to the world-famous town of Hermanus on the Hemel-en-Aarde Valley road. Cape Town is 2 hours to the west.

The Overberg takes its name from its location in relation to Cape Town: over the Hottentot-Holland Mountains – over the berg. The Overberg district stretches from the Klein River area on the coast, up to the higher-altitude Theewater and Elandskloof areas about 50 kilometers inland. As part of the Cape South Coast region, its neighbours include the Elgin and Walker Bay districts.
